summary_large_image and summary, side by side
Approximate X layouts. The card you declared is marked “your tag”; X changes its design from time to time.
What X reads
X needs twitter:card to choose a layout. For the title, description and image it reads twitter:title, twitter:description and twitter:image first and falls back to the matching og: tags, so a page with good Open Graph tags only needs the card type. twitter:site and twitter:creator credit accounts, and twitter:image:alt describes the image for screen readers.
X documents a 70-character title, a 200-character description, images under 5 MB in JPG, PNG, WEBP or GIF, and no SVG. A summary_large_image card shows the image at about 2:1; summary crops it to a square thumbnail.
Frequently asked questions
Why does X show no card for my link?
Common causes are a missing twitter:card, an image that is too large, an SVG, or a page its crawler cannot fetch because of robots.txt, a login or a firewall. X also caches cards for a while after the first share.
Can I use property= for twitter tags?
It usually works, but X’s documentation uses name=, so the validator flags it as a tip.
Where did the official card validator go?
X retired the preview part of its own validator, so composing a draft post is the only official way to see a card. This page checks the markup before you get that far.
